Optical transceiver design is a quite complex process as it requires multiple discipline technology such as electrical, mechanical, optical and firmware to come together precisely to provide required electro optical performance. 400Gbps Optical transceiver design presented a new technical challenges to the engineering community due to its high speed, number of host channels, power constraints, thermal requirements, electrical specifications, and its form factor. The IEEE and OIF standards defines electrical, optical, mechanical and firmware specifications to meet interoperability requirements while designer are free to choose the product architecture of their choice to meets specifications and reduce product cost for high volume manufacturing.
The paper will introduce the basics of optical transceiver design and presents design specifications, design considerations, available technologies such as EML, DML, Silicon Photonics and VCSEL, testing methodologies, interpretably requirements, and design challenges for 400G and 800G products.


A novice engineer will walk away gaining basic understanding of optical transceiver and its working principles.
