What happened to the return path in a cat 5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable? What's different about a cat 5 or cat 6 cable? How does this relate to a differential pair in a circuit board? What happens to the differential impedance when the return plane is removed? If the return current cancels out in the plane, does it matter if the return plane is there?
If you are troubled with these questions about the role of the return path in a differential pair, come to this performance where I will challenge your fundamental understanding of differential pairs as it collides with real world, live measurements.
