The fifth generation (5G) of cellular communication networks offers functionality to support new applications like vehicle-to-anything (V2X) connectivity. High data rates allow vehicles and road infrastructure to exchange sensor data, enlarging their situational awareness and improving safety for various levels of vehicle automation. Low latencies allow applications that improve safety like forward collision warning, and applications that improve traffic efficiency like platooning. This presentation reviews the requirements for V2X and the ways that 5G may address them. It will focus in particular on the role millimeter wave communication may play in providing high bandwidths for connected vehicles. Some speculation will be provided about ways that sensors and communication can interact together in future networks.

This keynote will be preceded by the presentation of award plaques to our 2018 Best Paper Award winners.
