Fiber optics are ubiquitous in cloud computing, data storage, and mobile applications, driven by huge demand for high bandwidth communication. The global fiber optics market is predicted to grow from 5 billion USD in 2018 to 9 billion USD by the end of 2025. In this keynote, past trends in fiber optics for datacenter and mobile will be reviewed and new developments predicted. Major technical advances in lasers, ICs, parallel, wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), FEC, and DSP will be related to key link parameters including rate, reach, and link budget. Two major trends of fiber optics replacing copper and coherent replacing direct detection will be looked at in detail. Major limitations of power and density, and new technologies like Silicon Photonics (SiPh) and co-packaging will be surveyed. Previous predictions will be compared to what actually happened, and then boldly made for several future generations of fiber optics, including how these could be disrupted by unexpected developments.
