An introductory presentation that clarifies most of the issues that keep ChipHeads awake at night. Starting with an intuitive approach to S-parameters and channel response. We'll see what causes of ISI (inter-symbol interference) and how equalization tries to soothe the pain. PAM4 only delays the agony by altering our perspective from jitter-limited to noise-limited angst and puts crosstalk in our sights. Fortunately S-parameters give us the window we need for calculating the damage done by crosstalk, right up until it collides with equalization. It's a sad tale guaranteed to keep engineers employed.
