Dr. Julia Downes has spent over 20 years in the computing industry. Starting out building and fixing computers for a local computing company, then designing and creating Internet and Intranet websites for small to medium enterprises. She has worked with the USA National Weather Association (NWA) on ad-hoc wireless weather sensor networks - advising on protocols and network setups. She has also worked extensively with embedded devices - from programming surround sound software for portable entertainment devices to near real-time software for controlling a stimulus waveform generator within a closed loop. A chartered engineer and member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology working group on AI in functional safety. Julia currently works for Dstl and conducts R&D into a variety of computing systems. Projects include the assurance of autonomous systems within multiple domains.
